Natural Stone for Facades
A stone facade is generally an exterior application and most often is the front facing elevation of a building.
Facades can be associated with either residential or commercial applications.
Stone is a tremendous option for facade work as its durable for the rigors of an exterior application, comes in a wide variety of colors and styles, and is a classic timeless look that will enhance the exterior of any project.
Probably the biggest draw for using natural stone on a facade is the beautiful look you can achieve. From a traditional stacked stone style look that can be achieved using a product like Norstone XL Rock Panels or a more modern vibe using Planc Large Format Tile, stone offers a huge range of styles and colors to chose from. Added benefits like being extremely durable and easy to maintain, energy efficient and eco-friendly make stone a great choice for facades.
The classic look of a stacked stone facade using Rock Panels and XL Rock Panels is a classic, timeless look.
Large format long and linear products like Planc exude a modern style perfect for contemporary designed facades.
Pairing modern stone products with elements like metal and glass or traditional stone products with brick and wood show how versatile stone veneer can be.
Many stone facades will have no or very low maintenance requirements, such as periodically needing to seal the stone, making natural stone an appealing exterior building material in terms of cost of ownership.
The type of stone and color selected should match the architectural style of the building. Generally warmer neutral tones with rough or splitface finishes are considered more traditional while darker colors with honed or smooth finishes work well with modern or contemporary design styles.
A stone facade is an excellent investment in the long term ROI of a building due to its low maintenance requirements and ability to offer a huge boost to curb appeal. Savings can be achieved by focusing on using the stone in areas that give the best architectural impact to the overall design, such as wainscoting or entryways, instead of the applying the stone to the entire elevation. Competent architects and builders can provide project-specific guidance.

FAQ
All Norstone products are suitable for use on a home facade. The best stone for your project will depend on the architectural style of the home and what look you are trying to achieve. Stone will be more expensive compared to basic building materials like stucco and siding, but since stone is such a durable and long lasting product with a low cost of ownership it is often seen as a renovation project with a high return on investment. A stone facade can completely change the way a home looks and make it stand out for the better.
The basic tenets behind a stone facade installation include starting with a cementitious substrate. The msot common for a stone facade are going to be brick, concrete block, cement board, or a metal lath and scratch coat layer. This cementitious substrate is then covered with an antifracture / waterproofing membrane which allows the installation to flex alongside changes in temperature and humidity and also prevents water from penetrating into the wall cavity. The stone iteself is installed using a polymer modified thinset and then should be sealed with a high quality natural stone sealer.
For complete details on installation visit our Installation Page and download installation guides for all of our products.
The maintenance requirements of a stone facade are going to be quite minimal. The most important thing that should be done is to seal the stone post installation and then re-seal it according to the sealer manufacturer’s specifications. Beyond that most stone facades will require no additional maintenance except spot cleaning stains or other areas as needed.
