Natural Stone for Interior Walls
Natural Stone Veneers are a great choice for any interior stone project where a unique and fresh look is desired. We work on projects ranging from entryways to alcoves, stairwells, accent and feature walls, powder rooms, fireplaces and many more. Essentially where any interior stacked stone wall is desired, Norstone is a natural fit.
Ultimately what makes Norstone the right choice is the quick and easy installation capabilities of our range – Every project has a difficulty level, but Norstone Veneers specifically are designed to minimize this by creating modular products that any tile setter or tradesman can set. Contact a Norstone Rep for more details.
Stacked stone veneer panels like our Standard Series Rock Panels, XL Series Rock Panels, or AKSENT 3D Rock Panels, are made from 100% real stone and are a perfect product for an entire wall or just a small accent in a room.
A stone veneer interior wall is a timeless look in any residential setting and a great way to dramatically change the way a space looks and feels as part of a renovation. Long linear products like Norstone Planc can complement a stone fireplace with a long and thin insert, while more traditional stacked stone panels can turn that stone fireplace into something right out of a ski chalet.
Installing stone veneer interior walls has never been easier. Previously, a stone fireplace installation with individual stones required extensive treatments and weeks of a mason’s time.
Now, with a real stone panel system like Norstone, you can complete that same stone fireplace in just a weekend. The most important consideration for an interior stone veneer project is making sure the wall itself is suitable for installation.
Norstone’s Stacked Stone Rock Panels weigh about 12.5 lbs / sq ft, which is pretty light when you think about the end product, but still most drywall or sheetrock wall substrates just aren’t unsuitable for an interior rock wall installation. This isn’t because they aren’t strong enough, it’s because drywall is essentially gypsum and paper – and when you think about it that way, it’s not something on which you’d naturally want to apply natural stone.
Install cement board over the existing wallboard first, then proceed with installing the interior stone veneer over the freshly prepared substrate.

When it comes to interior design and incorporating stone accent walls, as a designer, builder, architect, or project owner you should be striving to incorporate natural materials over faux stone products for several reasons. Firstly, natural stone products do not emit VOCs, making them safe for interior environments.
Secondly, interiors by their very nature mean that inhabitants will interact closely and often with their surroundings – a natural stone product on a feature wall or fireplace, for example, is no different than a beautiful granite or quartz countertop – you will simply enjoy interacting with a nature-made product more regularly than a manufactured stone product.
Finally, using real stone veneer materials inside the home will always add more value than using manufactured products. At Norstone, our goal is not only for your project to be beautiful, but for it to be a financially sound investment.
So often our design clients will select a stone to use thematically in multiple interior locations. Once you have that amazing stone fireplace wall or real stone accent wall installed, there are a number of options that become available for adding extra design elements to a natural stone surface, such as lighting and art.
One of the most popular is lighting, which can be projected either upward, downward, or designed to backlight the stone. We recommend soft down lighting most often for interiors, and to avoid spot lighting, as spot-lighting will detract from the natural texture of your wall. Regardless of your choice, lighting is always controlled for brightness and color.
Art pieces that either complement or contrast with the stone from a color and / or texture standpoint are another popular enhancement that allows for personalization and an elevated sense of style and design in the space.
FAQ
All Norstone products are ideal for an interior wall project, even the rougher textured split face products are used on everything from backsplashes to shower walls. Any stone used on an interior wall should be evaluated for weight considerations to ensure the wall can support the added weight of the stone.
Stone veneer is not waterproof but can be part of a wet or even submerged application. The most important aspect of a wet or submerged application is the substrate the stone or tile is attached to and ensuring that substrate is waterproofed which is often accomplished using a roll on membrane product called an anti-fracture waterproofing membrane. Visit our installation guides for more details on wet application procedures.
In general stone veneer will be slightly more expensive than brick. Norstone natural stone veneer products are similar to brick since they come as either panelized systems are easier to install than traditional loose stone veneer which is hand set and requires more skilled labor. Most of the difference cost wise between a brick and Norstone natural stone veneer is made up in the cost of the product itself where brick is manmade and stone is a product of nature.
